Jack Johnson tour goes 'To the Sea' with summer dates for North America : Hawaii native Jack Johnson has built his musical brand around breezy tunes and a laidback surfer's attitude, so it should come as no surprise that the singer-songwriter chose to fill the upcoming summer months with a full-length tour of North America.
The 32-city To the Sea Tour launches its first leg on July 9 at Comcast Theatre in Hartford, CT, and continues through the end of the month and a July 25 gig at River's Edge in Somerset, WI. After a brief break, the venture picks up with another single-month blitz on August 13 at USANA Amphitheatre in Salt Lake City, UT, running through an August 26 session at Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL.
A third and final leg will take Johnson's tour busses out to the West Coast for an October 1 engagement at General Motors Place in Vancouver, BC. The tour winds down, along with the season, with an October 13-14 run at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, CA.
Other highlights on the calendar include concerts on July 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY; July 19 at Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, ON; August 21 at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion in Raleigh, NC; and October 5-6 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA.
Public onsales for the trek begin on April 10 in markets across the nation. According to a moderator's post in the official fan forum, All at Once, ticket face values will be set at $49.50 throughout the tour. The moderator also noted that fans can look forward to the announcement of just one more concert date at the start of onsale week, on April 5.
As with previous tours, Johnson is taking this opportunity to give back to the community. A statement on his official Web site noted that 100 percent of profits from the 2010 tour will go to charity.
The ever-generous Johnson has also revived his Kokua Festival, a fundraiser for the musician's own Kokua Hawaii Foundation. That two-day fete is planned for Earth Day weekend, April 23-24.
Johnson's summer-long tour of North America follows close on the heels of his fifth studio album. "To the Sea" is slated for a June 1 release through the artist's own Brushfire Records label. The first single, "You and Your Heart" will make its radio debut on April 6.

Jack Johnson Biography (Short bio on Jack Johnson) : Before Jack Johnson perfected his casual rock star ways, he was a champion surfer on the professional route. The sport was second nature to the young Hawaiian native, who began chasing waves as a toddler and, by the age of 17, had become an outstanding athlete on the Pipeline. However, Johnson was also testing other creative outlets -- specifically film and music -- and a serious surfing accident convinced him to devote more time to those landlocked hobbies.
It was during his college years in the continental U.S. that Johnson began writing the relaxed, acoustic-based songs that would later turn him into a star. While studying film at the University of California at Santa Barbara, he also paired up with old friends Chris Malloy and Emmett Malloy to produced a surf cinema documentary entitled Thicker Than Water, which spotlighted Johnson as a talented cinematographer as well as a burgeoning singer/songwriter. His peers from the surf circuit praised his work, and Thicker Than Water received props in Surfer magazine as 2000s Video of the Year. The follow-up surf flick The September Sessions also earned the Adobe Highlight Award at the ESPN Film Festival that same year.
Still, Johnson steered away from a blossoming pro sports career and stuck with music, a move that would soon earn him additional honors. G. Love & Special Sauce quickly took notice of Johnson's lazy blues stylings, which also molded folk and hip-hop for a modern rock twist. One of Johnson's songs, "Rodeo Clowns," found its way onto G. Love's Philadelphonic in 1999, with Johnson contributing vocals and guitar licks to the track. Johnson's four-track demo then caught the ears of Ben Harper's right-hand man, J.P. Plunier, who opted to lend his production skills to Johnson's sultry studio debut. Brushfire Fairytales appeared in early 2001 and featured a cameo by Ben Harper, thus sparking a friendship between the two musicians.
Two co-headlining tours followed throughout the spring and summer of 2002, and Johnson's sophomore effort, On and On, appeared in May 2003. Stateside dates with Harper helped Johnson expand his audience, and On and On eventually climbed to number three on the Billboard charts. A third album, In Between Dreams, arrived in March 2005 and charted even higher, eventually going on to sell over two million copies. Johnson earned two Brit Awards for the album: International Male Solo Artist and International Breakthrough Act. In February, he issued the soundtrack Curious George. Nielsen SoundScan sales topped at 163,000 copies in its first week of release, earning Johnson his first-ever number one album on Billboard's Top 200 and Rock Albums charts. His sixth album, Sleep Through the Static, was issued in February 2008 and went platinum within a month of its release, a testament to Johnson's enduring popularity. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide ...
